Welcome back for another Friday blog. I hope the week has been productive and painless for you. It's been productive for me, if not necessarily painless. My day job has been really stressful lately, and this week was no exception. I've found it impacts my writing, and not in a positive way. When I get off of work with a pounding headache, I have a hard time getting started. When I'm asked to work additional hours, it leaves me with less time to write. Apparently, the gray hairs and extra pounds around my gut over the past eight years aren't enough of a sign of my commitment. Sigh. But let's get to what I actually want to talk about...unwinding.
Last weekend, I did quite a bit of that. We went camping last weekend for two nights, in the Targhee National Forest. We took our dog and one of our cats (pictured above). It was a great time and very relaxing. Of course, I took my laptop and ended up having two very productive days. After that, I spent another night away from home. A good friend I hadn't seen in over three years was going to be in the Salt Lake City area, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see him. So I drove down and stayed for a night. After a relaxing weekend in the forest, the traffic didn't even bother me. I stayed in a hotel for one night and ended up staying up late, writing some more. Staying in a hotel in the age of COVID-19 is not the same experience, by the way. Still, I can't complain too much. By the time I came home, I was four days ahead of schedule. I'm in the midst of another stressful work week now, but after the chance to recharge my batteries, I find it doesn't bother me as much. There are always going to be things that stand in the way of our writing. Work, family commitments, illness, stress. Part of the process is finding your own best way of working around these obstacles. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is find a way to blow off steam. Fortunately for me, last weekend was ideal because I was able to both de-stress and get a lot of work done. Tonight, I'll be playing some Grand Theft Auto Online with a few friends. Will it be productive? No. But will it help my work in the long run? I think it will. When you need to de-stress, what is your favorite thing to do? Until next time! ~Pete Follow me on social media!
