One of my favorite parts of the writing process is trying to put myself in the setting in which my characters are living. One of the most significant challenges I run into is finding the perfect amount of description. If we're being honest, most readers don't want excessive descriptions of setting. A reader might see something different than the writer, and that's fine.
Where do I find inspiration for my settings? I travel a lot (not so much this year), and I draw a lot from the places I visit. The picture above was taken in Hallstatt, Austria, in 2018. It's an incredible place to visit, but very crowded with tourists. If you have the opportunity to rent a boat like I did, it's very much worth it. The distance from the tourist throngs will allow you to really appreciate the natural beauty and tranquility of this place. Why do I bring up this particular trip? I've been writing a scene set in a new location, and when I view it in my head, I see a place not so different from Hallstatt. In my opinion, one of the best things a writer can do to help their work takes place away from their keyboard. Taking in the world around us, the places, people, and things around us can add something special to our work. Have you ever traveled to a place that inspired a setting in your book?
