Second Drafts

Welcome back to another edition of the Friday blog. I'll admit, this one kind of snuck up on me. I can't remember a week flying by so quickly in recent memory, not that I'm complaining. It's been a crazy week here in the states, and I hope you are all staying safe. 

I suppose one of the reasons this week has flown by is simple. I've been insanely busy. This is the busiest time of year for my day job, and I have been putting in a ton of hours to keep up. But I've also been able to put a lot of time into my favorite job, my writing! I'm currently working away at the second drafts of the second trilogy of the Thrawll Saga. The first book has been written for about a year; the third was written back in November for NaNoWriMo.

Whenever I am looking at a story for the first time since writing it, I'm a bit nervous. What if it turns out to be incoherent gibberish? Right now, I'm a few chapters into the second book. I've been relieved to find that has not been the case as of yet. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of work to be done. There are numerous typos to correct, sentences to clean up, and dialogue to improve. There are sections where more detail needs to be added to the story, and others where I was way too long-winded. But the story itself, I'm happy with, and I think readers will be too.

I love this set of characters. My main characters are a group of young soldiers in an epic fantasy setting. I wanted to explore the relationships between these friends, as well as the challenges they would face in this setting. It's been a lot of fun. It's a darker story than my first trilogy, as I think any military-themed story is doomed to end up. The darker storyline notwithstanding, I still think readers will have a lot of fun with it. The second draft might be the scariest of all, but usually, those fears are unfounded.
